These handmade wooden sauerkraut pounders are made by a local wood turner here in Nelson just for us. A pounder, stomper or tamper, is an essential part of making fermented cabbage based pickles like sauerkraut.
A good kraut needs a lot of brine made from the juice of the cabbage and the only way to get that juice to flow is to pound it with a blunt wooden tool like this one. These pounders are also really useful to gently press your pickles down when they are getting underway.
Our pounders are made from a variety of hard un-treated timbers that are sturdy enough to take the strain. They are light and tapered to fit in your hand comfortably. The head is approximately 4 cm across and the length is approximately 26 cm. They will vary as each one is handmade.
