Buy a bag of 6 cloves of heirloom Elephant Garlic. This is a fascinating bulb to grow. A member of the leek family it has a milder flavor than culinary garlic but grows in a very similar way.
Elephant garlic sets a hard stalk and flowers and we've always nipped the buds out to encourage larger bulbs but apparently, if you let them flower the flower buds are very tasty pickled like capers. Plant it in mid-winter at the same time as garlic and harvest it in mid-summer. Save some bulbs to grow again.
